Florida Keys National Marine Sactuary

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is an underwater ecosystem. The Florida keys are located on the southern tip of Florida and consist of 1,7000 islands. There are similar ecosystems throughout the carribean and in the southwest Pacific. Here there is the third longest coral reef system in the world.

Abiotic Factors

Plain sticky notes

Temperature

Warm temprature makes an ideal condition for coral reefs to grow. This is the only way coral are able to use photosythesis.

Water

This saltwater ecosystem is perfect for the species that live in it.

Human Factors

Plain sticky notes

Overfishing

Overfishing causes lack of fish affecting higher trophic levels. If the barracuda does not have enough parrot fish to eat it will starve and die.

Tourists

Careless snorkelers can damage and break fragile coral by standing on or leaning against it.

Producer

Plain sticky notes

Calcareous Green Algae

Population's role: Feed primary consumers/ bring energy into ecosystem Where it lives: Lagoon floor What it eats: The food it makes through photosynthesis What eats it: Sanils, crabs, parrot fish, lobsters, stingrays, and sea urchins Interactions: provides shelter for worms and slugs

Abiotic Needs and Interactions

Temperature- higher temperatures make ideal circumstances for photosynthesis Light- The more light the plant recieves the more productive it is making food/energy

Human Impact

Snorkelers, tourists, ships, toxic waste and fishers harm this producer in many ways. Affecting one trophic level can destroy or overpopulate a certain species.

Primary Consumer

Plain sticky notes

Parrotfish

Population's role: To feed the higher trophic levels Where it lives: Coral reefs and sea grass What it eats: worms, tunicats, aglae, phytoplankton What eats it:baracudas, moray eels, groupers Other interactions: Parrotfish use their bony teeth to scrap off coral polyps

Human Impact

When humans fish they sometimes catch too many parrot fish causing a large drop in their population. This is called overfishing. Also, when humans destroy coral it leaves lack of food for primary consumeers like the parrot fish.

Populaction's Abiotic Needs and Int.

Other interactions:parrotfish are native to warm water. The names come from the benklife mouth.

6-1-12

Secondary Consumer

Plain sticky notes

Abiotic Needs and Interactions

The barracuda needs open water for swimming which is provided on the higher areas of the coral reef ecosystem.

Human Impact

Humans sometimes kill producers in this ecosystem which leads to a lack of energy for animals in the higher trophic levels like the barracuda.

Barracuda

Population's Role: Eat primary and secondary consumers Where it lives: Along the coast in open water What it eats: Smaller fish, shrimp, and squid What eats it: Decomposers like the marine bacteria Interactions: May attack swimmers in the water
