MAP Test Information
Three times each year, our students take a test called Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). We give MAP tests to our students to determine their instructional level and measure academic growth throughout the school year. A web-based reading and mathematics test is given in September, January, and May.
MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to the appropriate level of each student's ability. The MAP test is an adaptive test, meaning that each student sees different questions that get more or less difficult depending on the student’s prior responses. The RIT (Rausch Unit) score is named after the person who invented this type of assessment. The data from the MAP tests help teachers reach students on their level.
RIT scores are divided into 10-point intervals or ranges. The range of RIT scores is different for each subject area test. For reading, the RIT range is 140-249. For Math, the RIT range is 150-above 269. We use the overall RIT score to monitor growth and use the skill area RIT scores to address specific learning needs and/or areas of weakness. Each RIT score can be compared to a normative data chart to compare a student's performance to that of all other students in the nation. The lexile score gives an approximate grade level for your child's reading ability.
RIT SCORE - A score given to each child based on their level of performance. The test accomodates for his/her learning styles based on correct or incorrect answers from the student.
RIT SCALE - A chart used to show grade level average for the MAP test.
