Part 1 & 2  Independent Reading & Paired Reading Selection

  • Read “Knots in my Yo-Yo string” with audio CD.  Model T4 reading strategy and review elements of literature (dialogue, narrator, theme, major and minor characters, plot, problem, climax, resolution, author’s purpose, characterization) and make graphic organizer of story elements with whole class.
  • Read “The Marble Champ.” Students complete T4 and make a graphic organizer showing literary elements of story.
  • Review 5th Grade Genres (historical fiction, tall tales, science fiction, fantasy, mystery) and 6th Grade Genres (narrative, adventure, folk tale, fantasy)
  • Students make a list of media of different genres. (i.e. TV shows, movies, novels, picture books)
  • Use various texts to identify uses of: personification, humor, element of surprise, emotional appeal, strong opinion, and credible support.
  • Administer Part 2 of 1st Quarter Assessment.  Check together and review.

Part 3A Writing from Knowledge and Experience

  • Show examples of student writing and have students guess scores based on the rubric.
  • Model choosing a topic, prewriting strategies, voice, adding description (snapshots & thoughtshots)
  • Administer Part 3A of 1st assessment.
  • Have students use rubric to evaluate their writing then see if it matches teacher evaluation.

Part 3B Writing Student Sample

  • Show examples of student responses to writing about student sample.  Have students guess scores based on the rubric.
  • Model proofreading techniques
  • Review grammar using language handbooks.  In particular, focus on 5th grade GLCE: compound subjects and predicates, proper nouns and pronouns, articles, conjunctions, hyphens in compound and number words, commas between two independent clauses to set off direct address/long phrases/clauses, colons to separate hours and minutes and to introduce a list.
  • Have students take Part 3B of 1st Assessment
  • Check together and review answers.
  • Have students use rubric to evaluate their writing then see if it matches teacher evaluation.
