About the Teacher

¡Hola! My name is Señora Smith.  I received my Spanish (and music) degree from LSU (GEAUX TIGERS!!) and this will be my 14th year teaching Spanish.  I'm super excited about my 4th year of teaching here at Eagle Heights Christian Academy!

I am married and we have one son, Gavin, who will be in PreK4 this year at EHCA. I love that he will grow up in a Christ-centered environment with people who love him and want what's best for his spiritual development.

I have learned Spanish myself through school and traveling.  The countries that I have visited, mostly on mission trips, are Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Honduras, and Belize.  I love traveling and learning about new cultures.  Our world is so big and has so much to offer!! It's a joy to learn about it.

The ABCs for Learning a Foreign Language

Analyzing skills improve when students study a foreign language.
Business skills plus foreign language skill make an employee more valuable in the marketplace.
Creativity is increased with the study of a foreign language.
Dealing with another culture enables people to gain a more profound understanding of their own culture.
English vocabulary skill increases.
Foreign language study creates more positive attitudes and less prejudice toward people who are culturally different.
Graduates often cite foreign language courses as some of the most valuable courses they took in college because of the communication skills they developed in the process.
Higher order thinking skills, like problem solving, dealing with abstract concepts, and inferencing, are all increased when you study a foreign language.
International travel is made easier and more pleasant through knowing a foreign language.
Job mobility and chances for promotion are often attributed to knowledge of a foreign language.
Knowledge of a foreign language promotes understanding of the difficulty immigrants face as they attempt to learn English.
Liberal arts training which includes foreign language study is sought more and more by prospective employers.
Memory is enhanced through foreign language study.
Not having a good attitude towards learning Spanish or learning about Hispanic culture adversely affects your performance in class.
Overseas business and joint ventures mean fluency in another language is now practically a requirement for employment in many American corporations.
Personnel in the army are paid more than others if they have foreign language skill.
Quality of English writing among students improves with foreign language study.
Reading skill in English improves when students study a foreign language.
SAT scores are higher for foreign language students, particularly on the English section.
Traveling abroad enhances cultural awareness and self-concept.
Ugly Americanism as a national stereotype is partially based on our belief that the whole world speaks English.
Various verbal and even non-verbal tests of intelligence have shown bilinguals to out perform monolinguals.
Working-class students do just as well in foreign language study as middle-class students, and there is no difference between genders or races in this area.
eXpertise in a foreign language aids the cognitive development of children.
Years spent studying a foreign language are proportionally correlated with increases in SAT scores.
ZZZZZ...wake up and smell the coffee! There are lots of vocational opportunities for foreign language speakers from government service to hotel management to Peace Corps service, Business and travel occupations.

TIPS for SUCCESS

How to be successful in Spanish Class 1. Study EVERY day. Spanish can not be crammed. It is really important that you are working on it a little every day. Even just 10 minutes a night EVERY night can make a huge difference. 2. Make use of EVERY second of class. 30-45 minutes 5 days a week is a VERY short time so it is really important that to participate fully, ask questions in class, try and use Spanish at every opportunity. 3. Find a way to study that works for you. Of all the students I have had over the years there has only been one that could really study well by just staring at a list. It is a strategy that just does not work for almost all people. Find a way to be active in your studying. Here are some great ways to study: a. Make and use flashcards (English or picture on one side, Spanish on the other). When you are using them go through them all once, making two piles (one for the words you get the first try and a second for words you don´t get right the first try). Then focus on the pile that you didn´t get correct the first try and slowly that pile will get smaller. Just don´t forget to throw back in the others at some point to make sure you still remember them. b. Write words out over and over. This helps to greatly improve spelling. c. Focus on small groups of words at a time. Study the first five words the first night until you know them really well and then add the next five the next night. d. Use online websites like www.conjuguemos.com I have e-mailed students (those who have logged in before) their username and password so if they kept the e-mail they should always have it. All vocabulary lists are on this website. Verb practice can also be found on this website. e. Download my podcasts of vocabulary. Listen to them on your ipod AND repeat (by repeating you are actively studying vs passively listening). This way you can take your vocabulary with you anywhere. f. Draw a picture for each word plus write the word. For some people, having an image to associate with the word, significantly helps them to be able to produce the word. g. Create list style flashcards. On the left column write the English word. On the right column write the Spanish translation or vice versa. Then fold the paper over so the Spanish isn´t showing and quiz yourself or write out the words on another sheet of paper. When you are done, it is really easy to double check your answers by unfolding the paper. 4. Come in for help as soon as you need it. Don´t wait until it is too late. Spanish builds upon what is learned previously. If you didn´t get the first thing we did, the next things we do will be very difficult. So come in for help right away. e to type
