PRESS RELEASE: ALL CHANGE

The organisation of West Sussex County Council's services for adults and children has changed from today (April 3). The two departments responsible for education and social and caring services are now called 'Children and Young People's Services' and 'Adults' Services'.

The new way of working follows the 2004 Children Act and the government's plans for a shake up in the way social care for adults is delivered - changes which the County Council supports.

The transformation is designed to make sure that everyone involved in the care and education of children and young people and social care for adults in West Sussex is working together to ensure that the services offered meet their needs.

Changes are being made within existing budgets and by working in a more co-ordinated way.

There will not be any disruption to services currently provided to members of the public as the changes will be in the way professionals, such as teachers, social workers and occupational therapists, work together.

The Cabinet Member for Children and Young People's Services, Mark Dunn, said: "The proposals for children put them at the centre of planning and providing services, to ensure that all children and young people living in West Sussex can be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve financial security."

The Cabinet Member for Adults' Services, Pat Arculus, said: "The plans for adults put social care at the heart of improving local communities and will be linked to regeneration, housing, leisure, transport, community safety, lifelong learning and health. In other words, social care that helps achieve a better quality of life for all our citizens."

The changes for both departments will take several months and during this time people may continue to see references to the old departments. The priority of the County Council during this transition is to concentrate efforts on maintaining current high levels of service across all activities.
