Grades Everyone is concerned and nervous about grades. “How am I doing?” “What is my grade?” “Does this count?” “How can I do better?” These questions and ones just like them are always asked. There are four major areas you will be graded on. The areas are as follows. Habit #2 Begin with the end in mind! TESTS (50%): There are no surprise tests and notice of a test will be given at least 2 days in advance. Test will be structured like the 8th grade Intermediate Level Science test consisting of multiple choice, short response and free response. If you are absent the day of a test, you will be required to take the test the day you return. Students will be required to circle all their answers in pen on a scan-tron test to avoid any mistakes by the machine with stray marks. No credit will be given unless the correct answer has been circled in pen with the machine picking up erased answers or stray marks made by the student. A notebook test will be implemented once a quarter to encourage good organizational skills. QUIZZES/LABS (40%): Quizzes are usually given on a weekly basis. If you are absent the day of a quiz you will be required to take it the day you get back. HOMEWORK (10%): Yes, the “H” word! Homework will be given 2-4x a week. It will be checked and sometimes collected. Every student starts with a homework average of a 100 for each quarter. Homework average is determined by dividing the number of assignments completed by the number of homework’s assigned. Homework calendars will be given out on a weekly basis at the beginning of each week. This will help enhance communication by detailing the assignments of the week and their due dates, Test and Quiz dates. www.protopage.com/mrshanahan8 will be used as a secondary means of communication in the classroom. This information is the same information the student’s receive on the homework calendar. HALL PASSES: No passes will be given at any time except in emergency situations. This is in line with school policy. Extra Help: Extra help will be held on a weekly basis. Please see homework calendar for assigned dates. Absences: Students are responsible for all missed work while absent and should be ready to take quizzes and tests upon return to school. Students can check for homework assignments and quiz and test dates on www.protopage.com/mrshanahan8. Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to the see the teacher immediately upon return to school or a grade of a zero will be given. Eschool: Please be aware of the Parent Portal that gives parents access to student’s grades. You may access the parental portal on the district’s web page. Please allow an appropriate amount of time for each assignment to be graded and posted. Please check the site on a weekly basis. Click here to type

Building a Cell! Purpose: To design a 3 dimensional Cell to gain a better understanding of the structure of the Cell and the functions of each organelle within the cell. Directions: Each student will be assigned an Animal cell or Plant cell to construct. Students will use household items to construct the cell. This project is meant to encourage creativity in selecting what common house hold materials they will use to represent the organelles and not to spend a lot of money on materials. How to do it: Be as creative as you want! You may use materials such as: • Clay • String • Styrofoam balls • Pipe cleaners • Paper • Jelly beans • Tooth picks • Cardboard • etc. What you MUST do: • Build a Cell that you were assigned. Includes: o All the organelles assigned for the type of cell (Animal or Plant) o Key representing what the structure represent the assigned organelles o Key explaining the concise function of each organelle assigned. o The cell represents the correct shape of the assigned cell o Labels the site of cellular respiration on the cell and the key When it is due: • Due Date:_________________________ How it will be graded: • This assignment will be graded as a Test. • Each day late will result in 10 points being deducted. • Failure to turn in will result in a ZERO as a test grade. Name:__________________ Date Science Build a Cell Rubric Build a Cell Rubric Type of Cell:_________________ 1. The model is creative and shows effort 20 points 2. The project has a key and it is easy to identify the parts on the model. 10 points 3. All the organelles assigned are included in the key and represented in the model if appropriate for that type of cell. 20 points 4. All the organelles are on the key have the correct functions. (See list below) 20 points 5. Appropriate material is used for the cell parts so it looks like the organelle being represented and has the correct shape for that type of cell. 10 points 6. Cell organelles are organized and positioned in there appropriate places within the cell 10 points 7. Proper site of cellular respiration labeled on model and key 10 points The key should be designed the following way: Organelle, Material used in Model, Function of organelle, Found in Animal Cell? Found in Plant cell? Organelles that should be included in the key and Model: Cell membrane, Cell wall, Nucleus, DNA in nucleus, Ribosomes, Mitochondria, Endoplasmic Reticulum (Smooth and Rough included), Vacuole, Chloroplast, Cytoplasm * Remember: Both plant and animal cells share most of these organelles. However, there are a few differences between plant and animal cells. Please refer to your notes for the complete list.
