Have you ever wondered why there were so many different musical styles in the 20th Century?
Or why some music from the genre sounds completely different to another?
Your quest is to discover the different styles of 20th Century music and how the maniplation of musical elements and devices creates such contrast in musical works.
The Task
· You are to research 20th Century Music and compile notes on important composers and developments in these periods.
· You are to research different compositional devices
· You are to research the elements of music
Analyse a 20th Century piece of music with specific reference to the use of the musical devices. Describe clearly how these devices are employed by referring to the Elements of Music and treating each with equal value
OR
Select two versions of a 20th Century work. Compare and contrast these pieces by referring to the Six Elements of Music. Describe how and when these elements are used in compositional devices.
You are to choose one specific topic within the 20th Century period. Given that there were many developments within the period, it would be best to focus on one part of the period in order to complete your analysis. For example Early 20th Century, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Early Rock and Roll.
Once this is complete you are to give a short talk to the class about the process and what you found out about 20th Century Music.
Firstly, you are to select a partner to work with and a topic you wish to focus on. (This project can be done alone, however to gain the most out of the task, it is preferred that students work together so that more content can be covered).
Once you have a partner, you should start researching 20th Century Music. You are to compile notes on important composers and developments. The given list of websites is only a small sample of information to select from. It is your responsibility to research further about the topics.
Questions to think about (make sure you post answers to these in your forum group)
Are these events relevant to the development of 20th Century Music?
Did this composer aid to the development of 20th Century Music?
Was there anything happening outside of music that contributed to the development of 20th Century Music?
Once you have researched 20th Century Music and compiled notes, you are then to do the same for the Musical devices and elements. Again, the websites listed are only a small sample of information to select from.
Questions to think about:
Do the musical elements chosen represent what was being developed during the 20th Century?
Do I know about compositional devices used in 20th Century Music?
Once both topics have been researched, you are to start to choose which task you would like to attempt. You are to then choose a piece of music from the 20th Century and start your analysis. Remember that once you have chosen the piece you wish to analyse, you must support your judgments with information attained from your research.
Some things to keep in mind for your anaylsis:
Once your analysis is completed, you are to work on a short talk that will be given to the class. You are to explain how you went about researching and how you came up with your notes. You are also to explain your findings.
Now lets get Started!
This is from the Learning Federation. It is a short clip of Rachmaninoff’s 3rd Concerto from the movie Shine.
Evaluation
This is the criteria in which you will be graded. You will also be asked to complete a self evaluation so that it can be seen how each student worked individually and in their pair.

You should now have a deeper understanding of music in the 20th Century. You should have knowledge about the different styles of music in the 20th Century and how the Musical Elements are manipluated to create the contrasting sounds you hear.
Some more things to think about...
Now you know how musical elements are manipluated to create contrasting works, think about how they have been manipluated to create the music you listen to or the music you would like to create yourself!
The aim of the WebQuest is to have students, through internet research, online collaboration and an authentic task:
The main objective of this task is to have students investigate music of the 20th Century to develop their musical skills. This is to help then develop and understanding of music and musical ideas that they can continue to use inside the classroom as well as outside the classroom.
In doing this they will need to:
Discover information about composers and developments in music in the 20th century
Understand how the musical elements have been manipulated in order to create different styles of music
Answer their own and other students questions on 20th Century music
Demonstrate their knowledge by analysising works from the 20th Century
Present their findings to the class in an informal presentation and an analytical essay.
Students will be assessed on how well they researched, their particpation in their own group and online discussions, their analytical essay and their presantation to the class.
Critera is a available on the student Evaulation page. Students will also have to complete a short evaluation on their own performance.
Easily adaptable to suit other year levels!
