ABOUT TODAY'S POEM -

____________________________________________________________________________________ Today is William Shakespeare's birthday! He is my favorite poet. Did you know that all 34 of his plays are written entirely in poetry form? What an undertaking! William Shakespeare lived in England and was born on April 23, 1564, and died on April 23, 1616. Did you notice - he died on his birthday! One of his best known plays is MACBETH. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth encournters 3 witches and this poem is what they are saying. It is famous, and you might have heard parts of this before. It is the witches' recipe for a potion. Could you find these ingredients? THE WITCHES SONG By William Shakespeare Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and caldron bubble. Fillet of a fenny snake, In the caldron boil and bake; Eye of newt and toe of frog, Wool of bat and tongue of dog, Adder’s fork and blind-worm’s sting, Lizard’s leg and howlet’s wing, For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and caldron bubble. Cool it with a baboon’s blood, Then the charm is firm and good. __________________________________________________________________________________ It has been very windy lately. Here is a very short poem by an unknown author about the wind. Let's hope the wind brings sunshine and not rain. LITTLE WIND Little wind, blow on the hilltop: Little wind, blow on the plain, Little wind, blow up the sunshine, Little wind, blow off the rain. ___________________________________________________________________________ Today's poem is written by Marlene Norris who lives near Bismarck. I called her on Wednesday to ask her permission to use her poem here. She was pleased that I called her for permission and even talked about coming to our school some day. When you are outside playing or going for a walk, take time to listen for and look at the birds. I even saw three eagles on Monday. Notice that this poem is only one sentence. And who is doing the same thing as the birds in this poem? REFLECTIONS from the book NORTH DAKOTA AND BEYOND by Marlene Norris. I see robins Hopping along a winding path, Children Hopping across a sidewalk, Meadowlarks Perched upon a fragile maple branch, Youngsters Perched upon a sturdy oak branch, Sparrows Catching insects in their bills, Kindergartners Catching insects in old glass jars, Eagles Casting forth their wings to fly, Preschoolers Casting forth their arms, imagining to fly, Natural joys Of graceful friends Restated by the young. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Is your family is thinking about or getting ready to plant a garden this summer? It is so much fun to plant seeds and watching them grow. I found this poem which is actually a finger play in a very old book that I have, and I thought it was a good one as we approach the beginning of the gardening season. The book title is FINGER PLAYS by Emilie Poulsson and the book was published in 1893! Good luck with your garden!! THE LITTLE PLANT In my little garden bed Raked so nicely over, First the tiny seeds I sow, Then with solf earth cover. Shining down, the great round sun Smiles upon it often; Little raindrops, pattering down, Help the seeds to soften. Then the little plant awakes! Down the roots go creeping. Up it lifts its little head Through the brown mould peeping. High and higher still it grows Through the summer hours, Till some happy day the buds Open into flowers. _________________________________________________________________________________ Are you getting tired of homework? Maybe a Homework Machine would help. Shel Silverstein wrote this poem about about just such a machine. Could you draw a picture of what the Homework Machine would look like? THE HOMEWORK MACHINE by Shel Silverstein The Homework Machine, oh the Homework Machine, The most perfect machine that's ever been seen. Just put in your homework, then put in a dime, Snap on the switch, and in ten seconds time, Your homework comes out, quick and clean as can be. Here it is -" Nine plus Four?" and the answer is three. Three? Oh me . . . I guess it's not as perfect As i thought it would be. Shel Silverstein was a writer of cartoons, songs, and children's books. His most famous books for children are THE GIVING TREE and THE LIGHT IN THE ATTIC. He also wrote the hit country song A BOY NAMED SUE that Johnny Cash sang. Ask your parents if they know that song. Also look on YouTube for Shel Silverstein's poetry being read. __________________________________________________________________________ This funny poem was written by Alfred Noyes. I used to read it to my sons when they were your ages. We have it in a book called A Child’s Book of Poems which is a collection of poetry. The book was copyrighted in 1969 by Gyo Fujikawa and published by Grosset & Dunlap in New York. I always like to know something about the poet. Alfred was born in England in 1880. He wrote poetry, stories, and plays. He and his wife had three children. He died in 1959. I hope you liked today's poem. - Mrs. Hartje

OUR LAST POEM-

Here's the last poem for National Poetry Month because today is the last day of April! But please don't forget about poetry. The sky is a beautiful blue today. Watch for white fluffy clouds. Then let your imagination fly as you look at the clouds and make up your own poem. What are the white sheep in this poem? What is the blue hill? This poem is by the famous poet Christina Rossetti. CLOUDS White sheep, white sheep, On a blue hill, When the wind stops You all stand still. When the wind blows You walk away slow. White sheep, white sheep, Where do y ou go? __________________________________________________________________________________ National Poetry Month is almost over. So let's write a poem. This poem is a fill-in-the-blank poem so it is easy to do. Wouldn't it be fun to write a poem for everyone in your family or for firends, draw a picture of that person, and give it to them on Friday for May Day? Try it. And send me an email of your poem if you can. MY FRIEND - By ___________________________ I have a friend whose name is ________________________ And we have lots of fun together. When my friend ________________________ comes to play We like to play _____________________________________ All the day.
